Academics blast BBC sci-fi series
DOCTOR Who has been branded "thunderingly racist" by academics.
They claim the Time Lord is dismissive towards his black companions and shows contempt for "primitive" people. New book Doctor Who And Race questions why the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, 30, would rather battle aliens like the Daleks and Cybermen than fight slavery.
And it slams the failure to cast a black Time Lord as well as the use of white actors to play Asian characters in the 1970s.
Australian academic Lindy Orthia, who helped compile the book, said: "The biggest elephant in the room is the problem privately nursed by many fans of loving a TV show when it is thunderingly racist."
But show supporters dismissed her claims.
Sebastian Clark, editor of Doctor Who Online, said: "To suggest the show is racist is ridiculous."
The BBC also hit back, saying: "Casting on Doctor Who is colour-blind. It's always about the best actors for the roles."
