Dr Who — The Ultimate Adventure

WELL, maybe not quite, "The Ultimate Adventure," but this stage does a remarkably good Job of bring the good Doctor's exploits from screen to stage. It is also two hours of simply wonderful nonsense.

The plot, such as It is, has the Doctor (the energetic Colin Baker) being called to 10 Downing Street to ensure that an American peace envoy sucessfully makes it to a forthcoming conference at which the world's future is at stake.

From this slightly shaky premise, the show gets into its stride as it flips rapidly (and sometimes not quite so rapidly) from one planet to another.

Naturally the Doctor and his companions — Graeme Smith as Jason, Rebecca Thornhill as Crystal — get involved in a succession of close shaves and scrapes with assorted mercenaries. Cybermen and, naturally Daleks, who are all up to no good. They also have plenty of near-misses trying to complete off-stage dashes faster than the stage crew.

Complete with a barage of lasers and other hi-tech effects, Doctor Who retains many of the qualities which makes it such an endearing favourite on TV. Not every effect %perfect, but that is part of Its charm.

More Importantly, it has a surprisingly witty script, bouyant performances from all, enough action to keep even the most restless child absorbed and some very menacing Daleks who still have the power to unnerve on their first appearance.

Finally, it is to this production's eternal credit that it never takes itself too seriously, which has always been one of the strengths of the series. Altogether now, "Exterminate, Exterminate!"
