[edit]

DR WHO is to have anew companion for his travels through time—a tough. leggy, brunette who will 'Separate the women from the girls" in the popular BBC television aeries.

She is called Leela, a cave-girl "barbarian" from a distant primitive planet, played by former Royal Shakespeare Company actress, Louise Jameson.

And she will be a complete departure from the usual younger ladies from Earth, mostly bright and educated whizz-kids.

For Louise, aged 25, will play an Avengers-style-heroine—handy with a crossbow and NOT adverse to killing enemies with poison thorns.

She will join Dr Who (Tom Baker) in the Tardis later in the present series and viewers will see her first appearance in the programme on January 1.

Louise replaces Elisabeth Sladen, Dr Who's companion for the past two-and-a-half years. who left the series last Saturday.

Until Louise arrives, the Doctor will be without a regular travelling girl friend.

Louise said she had been a Dr Who fan for many years. "I used to watch it from behind the settee at our home when I was a little girl," she said. "It used to really frighten me-especially the Daleks.
