CHRISTMAS in many Ulster towns will be a lot brighter this year - thanks to the help of local councils,
And in Londonderry, the city council, as well as helping traders to increase the display of lights, has engaged actor Tom Baker, better known as "Dr Who", to perform the ceremonial switch-on. He will be in the city on December 9.
Yesterday Mr Bob Ferris, president of the Derry Chamber of Trade, hoped that the presence of the popular Tom Baker would attract families into the city to shop. And today Bangor Chamber of Trade continues its tradition of being the first town to switch on the Christmas lights.
At 4.15 pm the Mayor of North Down, Alderman Mrs Mary O'Fee will switch on the lights which extend to High Street, Main Street and Abbey Street.
The local Chamber's chairman, Mr Evan Ward who is also chairman of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Trade said that this year green fluorescent lights will brighten up the trees of Castle Park for the first time for a few years.
In Belfast the great switch-on at the Christmas tree outside the City Hall takes place on December 11 at 3-30 pm.
