BBC-1 Controller Mike Grade has hit back at thousands of Dr Who fans who are fighting to save their favourite programme from being shelved.
Mr Grade, who decided that the long-running programme should be dropped for at least 18 months, called the fans "hysterical".
In a letter published in the Radio Times, Mr Grade says: "Long running television series do get tired and it is because we want another 21 years of Dr Who that we have prescribed a good rest."
