[edit]

THE BBC has set up special phone lines to protect its top executives from a telephone blockade being waged today by angry Dr Who fans.

The private numbers of 17 BBC managers and governors, from chairman Marmaduke Hussey down, are being bombarded by Dr Who enthusiasts protesting at the delay in commissioning a new series.

Ian Levine, an ardent fan, said: "The programme has deliberately been run down and the BBC is now playing a delaying game so nobody will care any more when it is eventually scrapped."

A BBC spokesman said: "We hope to make another series in the future." The BBC admitted it had received a "substantial" number of calls today.
