DALEKS and dinosaurs will be on the South Bank this weekend for Dr Who's birthday, being celebrated at the National Film Theatre with the biggest-ever screening of episodes from the TV series.

Although no one is sure exactly how old the Time Lord of the Tardis really is, it is 20 years since his inter-galactic policebox first took off from a London junkyard.

The opening episode took only an hour to record but the Dr Who shows now being watched by the children of first generation fans require months of preparation.

It is because Doctor Who has been screened since 1963, says the NFT, that it strikingly reflects the development of TV, both in art and technology.

So the weekend at the NTFT is not simply a hooray for the Doctor celebration: the programme includes serious discussions about TV science fiction programmes.

One session, on Sunday at 5 pm, will include Heather Hartnell, widow of the first Dr Who, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton (Who-2) and current producer John Nathan-Turner. In all, 70 episodes—featuring all five Doctors (Hartnell, Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davidson) and such favourite villains as Daleks, dinosaurs, Cybermen and space pirates — will be shown over two days, beginning tomorrow at 2 pm with an unscreened pilot episode and the first four-part story The Beginning.

Admission is restricted to NPT members but special short-term memberships are available.
