[edit]

CHILDREN in Need will really be reaching out to viewers this year. Special programmes are being broadcast in 3-D, including a Doctor Who 30th birthday celebration featuring all five surviving doctors and a host of former assistants.

Entitled Dimensions In Time, the action will take place in Albert Square and will bring in a futuristic Eastenders cast.

Pauline Fowler, Kathy Beale and Sharon Mitchell will be aged by 20 years. The first episode will be shown on November 26, which is Children in Need night.

Viewers will then be able to phone in to vote for their preferred ending, which will be shown during Noel's House Party the following evening.

Thomas Hohenacker of Telecast International who are providing the 3-D system said: "It will not be like anything you have seen before. "Without the glasses you will get a normal TV picture, and not the fuzzy old version."

Old 3-D was produced by showing two versions of a scene at once which the glasses converted into stereo pictures. The new system ticks very quickly between the two versions.

Known as Nuoptix, it was designed by Terry Baird who also invented the DTS sound system used in Jurassic Park.

Further 3-D programmes are to be broadcast in the week after Children in Need. Noel's House Party, Saturday November 27, Blue Peter, Monday November 29. Top of the Pops, Thursday December 2. Tomorrow's World, Friday December 3.
