Sale time as fans materialize to buy a piece of TV history

DR WHO is about to face up to an enemy even his galactic powers cannot defeat .. . an army of fans.

And in this battle the Time Lord will lose the very clothes he stands up in, as well as seeing the vanquishing of his arch enemies the Daleks and Cybermen.

In the most important science fiction auction for many years, the BBC is to sell off some 200 costumes from the 25-year-old series because its wardrobe department has run out of space.

Included in the sale will be costumes worn by Peter Davison, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy when they played the Doctor.

Fans from as far apart as Winconsin in America and Sydney, Australia, have besieged auctioneers Bonhams for details of the sale, which takes place in London on May 11.

The big interest will be in the two Daleks and a Cyberman, each of which is expected to make £4,000.

The two Daleks have room for a person inside and come complete with the famous exterminator gun.

Dr Who has now been off the air for 18 months and the BBC says the delay in screening a new series centres around a debate over whether the programme will continue to be made by the BBC or by an independent company.

But the corporation, which has kept some costumes, says there will be a Dr Who 'at some time'.
