Dr Who weaves its spell of success

[edit]

WHY is it that so many of the participants in Dr Who speak in these slack, vague, lazy London accents which one associates with such a large number of children's morning shows?

It is that, for sure, combined with consistently dreadful acting, which makes this programme's apparent magic so difficult to understand.

The doctor's assistant, Ace, seized by some dark force, suddenly shouted to her companion this week: "Listen 'ere you toe-rag just you shut up or I'll knock your teeth out."

The whole show always makes me think that an unspeakably ropy North London amateur dramatic society has teamed up with a combination of low-budget special effects experts and à disaffected, camp Shakespeare wardrobe master who has escaped with the costume hamper.

Essence

The whole lot, one imagines, have gone off for the day to some Essex gravel pits with a Dixon's video recorder.

It really is very, very bad indeed. But that, one suddenly sees in a flash that other more clever observers no doubt experienced many years ago, is probably the very essence of its huge success.
