An Ely grandmother is Britain's No. 1 space-age cook.
Certainly Jon Pertwee, television's Dr. Who, thinks so. Yesterday at the London Hilton he sampled 63-year-old Mrs. Edna James's "beehive shrimp croustades" and pronounced them perfect.
His opinion was shared by the Hilton's head chef and two other judges, so Mrs. Janes, of 3 St. Andrey's Way. was winner from six finalists and thousands of entries in a national retail chain's cooking competition.
The competition called for a recipe for Dr. Who, and Mrs. James, grandmother of four, chose a sea-based food.
She is not a professional cook. Until three years ago her husband, Mr. Thomas James, was head teacher at Black Horse Drove Primary School while she looked after the infants.
Now, having retired to Ely, competitions are her hobby. Already Mrs. James has a won holiday to Geneva and a deep freeze for her kitchen. Yesterday's cooking brings her a new fully equipped kitchen, valued at £1.000.
"I do not think I have come down to earth yet," she said last night on her return from London. "We stayed overnight at the Hilton, in a suite overlooking Hyde Park."
