London, July 7.

Children's television on both BBC and the commercial channel have been lambasted by two local educationalists in a report published by the Advisory Centre for Education. Edward Blishen, a lecturer at York University, says that after a survey of the two channels he found that kidvid was "dreadfully miscellaneous and lacks heart and centre."

BBC's "Dr. Who," one of the most popular kidshows on the air, is put down as "compulsive nonsense" by Blishhen. But he likes BBC's adaptation of classics like "Lorna Doone," "The Old Curiosity Shop" and "Martin Chuzzlewit." But he found these to be "solitary peaks" surrounded by entertainment of children's party level with much "weak and embarrassing slapstick."

There is need, he thinks, for more "daring, ambition and compulsive sense."

Backing up Blishen's view, the ACE secretary Kathleen Hartly, also knocked the "abysmally low level of light. entertainment programs." She finalized: "It's no wonder the children go wild over the Beatles, they are so much better than anything they offered on their normal children's programs.
