[edit]

HE HAS been a faithful sidekick since the 1970s but Doctor Who's wisecracking metallic mutt K-9 is to get his own TV series and feature film.

While the robotic canine won't be joining new Doctor Jodie Whittaker when the series returns in a new Sunday slot on October 7, his creators say he has a bright future.

The rights to the character, who first travelled in the Tardis with Tom Baker in 1977, belong to scriptwriters Bob Baker and Paul Tams.

They said on the K-9 Facebook page: 'We have entered into a partnership with a major US/UK company and are now developing a new multi-million-dollar series which will establish the K-9 brand prior to the release of the feature film.

They said the new adventures would be set in space, akin to 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'. More details are set to be released next year. Meanwhile, Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall, spoke of his excitement at the new timeslot.

He said: 'Get everybody's homework done, sort out your Monday clothes, then grab some special Sunday night popcorn, and settle down with all of the family for Sunday night adventures across space and time.'
