New Dr Who is natural comic

David Tennant, the Scottish actor cast as the tenth and latest Dr Who, says of his character. "I think we've come up with something distinctive that's both timeless and modern, with a bit of geek chic and of course, a dash of Time Lord."

So far, so good But if Tennant, 34, who takes over the role from Christopher Eccleston, is to be a truly tuneless Time Lord he should be using the part of his acting repertoire we rarely see.

Trail

In the recent Blackpool (BBC1) he was the sly detective on the trail of David Morrissey. In the Radio 4 recreation of Dixon of Dock Green he was the reliable DC Andy Crawford.

But he is at his best not being sly, reliable ar welt David Tennant is one of Britain's greet natural comedy actors

We saw glimpses of his quick wit and slap- David Tennant is the new Dr Who. PETER RHODES otters some timely advice for the Time Lord - play It light

stick skills in Casanova (BBC3) when he played the great lover as a young man.

But his natural comedy skills came to the fore five years ago at Stratford when he starred opposite Wendy Craig in the RSC production of The Rivals.

He played the dashing but dim Jack Absolute and turned in one of the funniest, best-timed comedy turns seen on the Stratford stage.

Billie Piper who plays the Doctor's sidekick Rose says: 'Wait until you get a load of the new Doctor."

The new series is set for broadcast in spring next year
