  • Abstract: This study provides a feminist analysis of the female companions of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who during its early years, which coincided with the sexual revolution of the 1960s and the formation of the Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1970s in postwar Britain. This study examines closely the relationships between the companions and the Doctor, the characterizations of the companions, the roles they played, and how they were depicted. In looking back over the evolution of the female companion in Doctor Who during the William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, and Jon Pertwee eras, this study identifies how this iconic pop culture phenomenon was both influenced by and reflected the changes in society. The conclusion argues that Doctor Who, with its existence throughout second-wave feminism and its established place in British popular culture providing a singular opportunity to enrich the academic discussion about the portrayal of women, fulfills an important place in the wider discussion about the intersections of feminist and gender issues with transient popular culture
