WHEN Doctor Who was grounded from his time travels last year there was a public outcry - the BBC was deluged by mail and the switchboards were jammed by calls.
And even though he hasn't been seen in the role for over a year, Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, has continued to get fan mail 'Up to 50 letters a week from people who write as though they saw the programme yesterday,' he says.
But there's good news this week for all fans of the show as Doctor Who returns with a new series of adventures (Saturday BBC1).
Although this has been the longest vacation the Doctor has ever enjoyed, he has, in fact, appeared on television every year since the first programme in November 1963.
Colin Baker has found the break frustrating. 'I'd only just got my teeth into the part. It was certainly a jolt to stop.'
Despite his absence from our screens, Colin has still been in demand as the Doctor. He did a radio version of the show last year for Pirate Radio 4 and, although he prefers television, he enjoyed the experience. 'The sets were brilliant and the costumes wer wonderful,' he jokes. And, because it was radio, I didn't have to learn my lines!
He also went to six Doctor Who conventions in America where fans get a chance to meet the stars and the people who put the show together.
'They're for people who want to talk about the programme, look at it, compare notes and dress up,' says Colin. 'At most of them you see half a dozen versions of each Doctor, the companions and the Master.' Not forgetting, of course, the Daleks
