LAST NIGHT

"He will not be exterminated," said Dr Who enthusiasts when the BBC planned to axe the programme three years ago.

They won the battle and Dr Who, launched as a children's programme in 1963, gained even more of a cult following from all ages.

The reason Michael Grade, then BBC boss, wanted to end the show was that it had become dated.

The new series Remembrance of the Daleks is set back in the sixties and that only helps to show how right he was.

As the title indicates, it features the return of the evil Daleks, who, in fact, have only featured in 18 of the 151 Dr Who stories.

My own memories of the programme date back to watching the Daleks in the early sixties with my young children, but I have rarely seen it since.

If the shows since then were anything like last night's offering. I have not missed much. The actors portrayed clockwork characters, and the script was as predictable as clockwork.

It's time Dr Who was pensioned off ... or ex. terminated.
