I love television when it's spelled PBS

I have an admission to make: I love television. Or rather, I love television when it's spelled PBS.

Three's Company doesn't thrill me. Archie Bunker's Place leaves me cold. Even the highly touted Hill Street Blues seems to be merely highly touted claptrap.

But turn on Channel 5 — WUFT TV, the local PBS affiliate — and I'm hooked for the evening.

Think of all the great programs that PBS has aired over the years. Monty Python, Upstairs, Downstairs, War and Peace and I, Claudius (which can currently be seen Wednesdays at 10) are just a few that spring immediately to mind. PBS was responsible for these successes, not ABC, CBS, NBC, TBS or any other BC or BS.

Until March 20 WUFT is conducting another fund drive, and that means a few extra goodies for just about everyone, if you can stand those damn commercials (a.k.a. pledge breaks) they insert in the middle of each show.

This Saturday could be called sci-fi night for WUFT. The regular showing of Dr. Who at 6 p.m. will be followed by Once Upon a Time Lord, a behind the scenes look at the Dr. Who series. At 8:30 a 3-D movie, Revenge of the Creature, will be shown. To get the 3-D effect you will need special glasses — which are on sale for $1 for two pairs at Jiffy Food Stores — and a color set.

Also, WUFT is sponsoring a mini-Dr. Who convention Sunday, March 13, 1 p.m., in the Carleton Auditorium. The convention will feature several movies starring the new Doctor, Peter Davison. Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Reitz Union Box Office.
