I OFFER my congratulations to Britain's latest celebrity pensioner, Tom Baker. On the subject of his age he booms: "Richard Ingrams from The Oldie even wanted me to join him and his cronies, but the last thing I want to do is sit around eating apple pie with people like Harry Enfield's dad."

So what are his plans for 1999? "Plans? plans?" he barks. "You don't have plans when you're 65 -- it's an amazing thrill to wake up in the morning." However, Tom, whose scintillating autobiography, Who On Earth Is Tom Baker? — just out in paperback - concedes one smidgen of consolation. "Television is a marvellous thing." he enthuses. "It confers a kind of immortality on you. I realised the other day whilst watching an old movie that the living are largely entertained by the dead. I made 178 episodes of Dr Who, so I'll probably rock on long after they've interred me. Until then I'm saving up for my own hospital trolley"
