SO Peter Capaldi is to be the new Doctor Who. That's a pretty big risk. Capaldi is a superb actor but for every single one of the viewers the face that we see when he regenerates will be that of

Malcolm Tucker, the sweary spin doctor on The Thick of It. Has there ever been another Doctor who has come to the part so powerfully identified with a previous role? Oh. Perhaps there is. The image troubles my mind —courtesy of All Creatures Great and Small — of Peter Davison with one arm shoulder-deep in the north end of a southbound cow. Davison's portrayal of the Fifth Doctor survived that subliminal indignity, just. I reckon Capaldi has a decent shout at making the role his own.
