NAIL-BITING WAIT AS STAR HURTS BACK
DAVID TENNANT has been forced to pull out of his sellout performance of Hamlet after injuring his back.
The Doctor Who star was in so much pain he could not go on with the show yesterday, forcing an understudy to step in.
Royal Shakespeare Company producers face a nail-biting wait to discover if he will be fit enough to appear in to, night's gala press night.
The 37-year-old has an "ongoing" back problem which flared up on Friday, although Tennant was on stage over the weekend and is "desperate" to perform tonight when the the critics attend.
To go ahead without the main star would be a huge blow for the RSC as there are unlikely to be any tickets for reviewers on future nights. Seats sold out within three hours when they went on sale in September, and counterfeiters even targeted the production in the first West End sting of its kind.
The understudy Edward Bennett, who normally plays Laertes, got a standing ovation, but audiences upset at not seeing Tennant will not receive a refund as tickets are sold to see the production, not the specific cast.
