Daleks, the space robots which enthralled a million children in Dr. Who, the science fiction serial, are to be marketed by the BBC.

"It is still to be decided whether they will be in the form of finish models or make-it-yourself kits," a spokesman said.

Made from fibre-glass and wood, the Daleks are 5ft. tall and hollow. They move on casters, and a child can control them.

Hundreds of children wrote to ask what would happen to the Daleks when they disappeared from the series.

And biscuit tins, too

But the BBC finally sent two to Dr. Barnardo's Homes, keeping two in case they are needed for TV in future.

The spokesman went on: "The copyright of the Daleks rests with us. They were created by one of our staff designers, Roy Cusick."

Unusual for the BBC to market goods? No.

There is a department called "B.B.C. TV Enterprises" selling programme recordings, Black and White Minstrel biscuit tins, puppets, books, and toy kangaroos inspired by the symbol of the new channel.
