THE hunt is on for a new Doctor Who.
Actor Peter Davison is to quit as the Doctor when be finishes recording the current BBC television series to be screened in January.
Davison, the fifth Doctor, took over the role nearly two years ago from Tom Baker.
His last series will be his third in the role, but he will also be seen in The Five Doctors, a 90-minute special to celebrate the programme's 20th anniversary, and three complete Dr. Who Adventures to screened in August.
John Nathan-Turner, who produces the programme said: "I will be starting an immediate search for the sixth actor to play the lead role in the world's most popular TV science fiction series"
During his stint as the Doctor, Peter (31) became a cult figure in the US where the serial has a huge following.
Dr. Who has been sold in 39 countries.
Peter announced later that when he took the role of Dr. Who he was only going to play it for three years.
He said: "By the time the next series is seen I will have been in the role for three years and since the beginning of this year it has been a battle on whether I go back on what I said at the beginning.
"I have decided to stick to what I said".
Peter added that there was no significance in the timing of his announcement.
Talking during a break in rehearsals at the BBC studios in west London, Peter said: "I had to let the BBC know by a certain date whether 'I would be carrying on because of the mechanics of getting a new person to play the role".
