DRAMATIC scenes from the new Dr Who series show Big Ben being destroyed in a 9/11-style attack.
In images that some viewers might find distressing the famous London landmark is hit by a UFO flown deliberately towards it.
The clock tower is left burning with a huge hole in it while the terrified population look on helplessly.
The scenes will appear in the new BBC series, which starts tonight.
But there are fears the storyline will upset viewers still affected by the horrific terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York in September 2001. A BBC insider said: "It may be disturbing for some of the younger viewers. The producers thought long and hard about whether to include the storyline."
Computer graphics are used to show the devastating effects of a UFO crashing into Big Ben before careering into the River Thames with smoke trailing from its tail.
Mock news reports give the dramatic scenes a realistic edge.
Christopher Eccleston, 41, plays the Doctor and Billie Piper, 22, is his assistant Rose Tyler.
