Doctor Who has returned for a 13th series: it is Jodie Whittaker's last time in charge of the Tardis. The corporation guards the show as if it were a globally impactful Marvel release, issuing shouty, self-important notices demanding no one release any information "pre-transmission". Only, who cares? What would we tell anyone anyway? That the baddie wears gold lipstick? As it happened, I was perfectly happy not to tell anyone anything about it, if only to save them the embarrassment.

The first episode began in Liverpool in 1820 with some man telling us that "the cataclysmic" was on its way. And sure enough, there he was - John Bishop, a man people only think is funny because of the way he speaks. He arrived home one night only to be accosted by a teddy in a suit of armour - normal for Liverpool, I guess - who dragged him up into space in order to save him from "the flux". Minutes later the Doctor is boaked out of the Tardis.

What has Whittaker brought to this role that the others haven't? I couldn't tell you, except she just seems a bit... less. She is less mad, less charismatic, less eccentric, less engaging than almost every other Doctor there has been. You look at her and think: is that what the Doctor has become now, a person in a hoodie? Only why make her/ him just like everyone else?
