With a rapidity matched only by the speed of his voice changes Jon Pertwee is, at the moment, dashing up and down the country in a succession of cabaret appearances which, as he says, take him back to the grass roots of his profession. 'It does one good to experience this direct contact with an audience again,' he comments. 'The Dr. who image doesn't stick too hard fortunately. Occasionally someone will ask me where the Tardis is, but mostly I'm just accepted for what I am.
At the end of his cabaret run which takes him to places as far apart as Edinburgh and Weymouth, Pertwee will return to London - his home is in Barnes, 'the Beverly Hills of South London' - to make a second in a series of classics recorded on tape for children. The first was an Alice in wonderland; the second is Treasure Island. Then there is a new Dr. Who in January - and The Navy Lark goes on forever.
Pertwee can be heard this week in a new panel game chaired by Clement Freud, Right or Wrong (Wednesday, 6.15 Radio 4). It's apparently less valuable to know the answers to questions than it is to mislead your opponents into thinking you do. Other participants include John Cleese, Barbara Kelly and Andrée Melly.
