[edit]

I HAD GONE right off Dr Who and his timeless tussles with unspeakable yettis, monsters and nasty shapeless things.

Far too frightening and liable to give you a dicky heart with all that excitement, I figured. But no longer, friends, and I hope you've all been watching the latest series!

Laugh-a-minute stuff and it's meant to be. All three doctors have been brought together in the story which has given the thing a nice blend and posed the question -just who's who?

tL m e m thats me an(l hini and him—we all play hrmtatit P art in different ways. Patrick (Troughton) played him as a comic w and pose(l clown character so I've got to go along the question just who s who. with him. I pretend to be irrascible

Dr Who (Mark III) in the terrestrial form of Jon Pertwee, is pretty pleased too - but then he's been totally wrapped up in the space race for four years now and it's still as much fun, he says, and it was when he first donned his cape.

"It's not intentionally funny, actually," he says. "It's just that when they wrote the three doctors together — that's me and him and him - we all play the part in different ways. Patrick (Troughton) played him as a comic clown character so I've got to go along with hm. I pretend to be irrascible about the whole thing while he fools about. That's not me!"

The third and original Dr is William Hartnell.

Believe it or not, Jon has become totally involved with the role over the years. "Well I had to play it differently from the others because I hadn't seen it before I was offered the part. But I wanted play it straight — I think it should be like that for the children," he confided.

"You see they have to follow. It's a theory of mine but I think you've got to make it believable. Like you've got to have a sense of responsibility when you're dealing with kids."

With a touch of the doctor's irrascibility, he dismisses claims that the show is too scary for kids at times.

"If children have nightmares," he said firmly, "then don't let them watch it. It's as simple as that. If it's having an effect on them, then you can turn the off show because there are lots who really revel in it."

He candidly admits that they did make one serious mistake.

"We had faceless policemen and when somebody got in a police car and the man in front turned round, there was just a blank head. We realised it was wrong to do that. Lots of parents are telling their children that police are nice we were making them like bogeymen. We won't be making that slip again."

The doctor has brought fame to Pertwee, an actor who had achieved almost everything else in the business before the TV boys dropped in. He even did a spell on Broadway with "There's A Girl My Soup" which he hated because "things were terrible over there because union regulations."

Mind you, he says he'd go back like shot if he was offered, even if it did mean packing in the old doctor.

"If something did come along then I think I would rather leave TV for a few years. You tend to get overexposed," he tells you. It would be quite a wrench since he's working nine months in year with "Dr Who." Then there's the Navy Lark" - "that's my pension, you know" — which just started recording for transmission soon. It's their 15th year on the show which means it has broken all records.

He still has plenty of ambition.

"I'd like to make a go of films," he told me. "They're still unconquered to my satisfaction. They kept giving me bit parts so everyone got bored and producers the dropped me. I'm older and longer in the tooth now so I'd like ago again."

A forthcoming film of "The Navy Lark" could put him right on that road.
