[edit]

ONE OF the few people to keep their feet firmly on the ground when the BBC announced halting production of Dr Who was one of the time lord's former incarnations — actor Patrick Troughton.

Patrick, the second doctor clad in tartan trousers and playing a recorder, thinks that the public over-reacted to the news.

The BBC were just announcing a gap, there have been gaps before," he said.

"Maybe the BBC will show some old repeats of previous series, I wouldn't mind watching them," he added.

This week he appears as another eccentric character in the opening play of the BBC's new summer season of drama, Long Term Memory (Tuesday, ISBC2. 9.35 p.m.). He plays a man suffering from intermittent amnesia. who walks out on his wife and family. Twenty-one years later he re-appears out of the blue.

Written by actor / writer Martyn Read it is based on the real-life experiences of the author's landlady.

"It is a marvellously written part, so it. was very easy to play. Also It isn't very difficult for me to play someone who is absent-minded these days." sass Patrick with a laugh.

At 65 he has now entered the realms of old-age pensioners' bus and rail passes — a far cry from his days of travelling through time in the Tardis.

Convention

But he still keeps an annual date with the blue police box at the Dr Who annual convention to Chicago every November.

"Dr Who a great character," he says." He is a bit eccentric and a bit of wicked fun. There are usually about 7,000 people at the big convention who throw their hats in the air and cheer. Then there are the autograph sessions which can last anything up to four hours."
