ACTOR Don Henderson, who plays quirky TV detective Bulman, is worried about his next assignment. He's got to kill comedian Ken Dodd.
Ken is about to die for the first time in his 30-year career at the hands of Don when they team up with a host of other stars in the next series of Doctor Who.
Ken isn't worried. "My death scene will be one of the longest ever. It's the first one I have ever done and it's my big acting break." he said.
Ken and Don come up against each other in one of the four adventures now being filmed for the new 14-part series of Doctor Who, which begins on BBC Television in September.
Ken's only other dramatic role was in Shakespeare when he played Malvolio in a production of Twelfth Night. The next big scene is his death scene. "I get zapped no one ever gets killed in Doctor Who by Don, and I'm going to play it op to the hilt.
"I will woll and writhe and you'll hear the longest 'aagh' on television ever. It's my big chance," said Ken, who is planning two more stage roles next year besides his regular comedy appearances.
He plans to bring "Doddyspeak" Onto Doctor Who. He said: "I think I am there partly as the character I play and partly as Ken Dodd. But they wouldn't let me bring tickling stick."
Mr. Michael Grade, BBC TV's director of programmes, caused an outcry when he threatened to axe Dr. Who, claiming it was too vio:ent and lacking in humour. The new series puts that right, bringing in a host of comedians and sears.
Ken said: "I would be horrified to see Doctor Who go - it's a British institution."
Other stars joining the cast include Stubby Kaye, Hugh Lloyd and Richard Briers, who plays a villain for the first time. Leading actresses Kate O'Mara, Wanda Ventham, Brenda Bruce, Elizabeth Spriggs and Judy Cornwell will also be joining the new Doctor Who who is 43-year-old Sylvester McCoy.
