Not even deadly Daleks can keep the old Doctor down
IT'S a tight squeeze in a police box but these three doctors and two villains reckon they timed it just right.
They're all keen members of Australia's Dr Who Club and they were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Doctor's first arrival in 'Australia — on television screens in Perth.
Three days after hitting Perth the Doctor reached Sydney and he became a national institution attracting fans of all ages.
Club president, Dallas Jones, keeps this police box in his bedroom — it's a reminder of the time . machine, the Tardis, the doctor uses to travel about in. When there's no time travelling scheduled, the Tardis serves as a wardrobe.
It's only natural that ardent Dr Who fans have to be a little strange. After all their hero has been banned on occasion by the ABC, has two hearts and is 750 years old.
And he's regularly watched by more than 100 million people in 54 countries.
The Doctor celebrated his Australian birthday with friends and fan club members at the University of Sydney yesterday. His Australian fan club is a mottley group of about 1500 hero worshippers ranging in age from six to 72.
Mr Jones, a Telecom clerk when he's not involved with time travel and space adventures, has seen all the Doctor Who stories screened so far — except those banned by ABC censors because ,they didn't fit the screening time.
The party was a celebration of all things Dr Who — the five Doctors, K9 the mechanical dog, archfiend the Master, more than 20 of Doctor's assistants and monsters from hundreds of galaxies.
There was Dr Who history, Dr Who lectures, Dr Who costumes and Dr Who food.
But there was no Dr Who this year — the club has attracted two of the Doctors to its celebrations in the past.
All the fans want now is a starting date for the new series. Alas, the ABC cannot help yet.
