ACTOR Christopher Eccleston, who is In Leeds rehearsing for the latest production at West Yorkshire Playhouse, has been nominated for a Bafta.

Eccleston, who has also landed the part of the next Doctor Who, has been nominated for his role in the ITV drama, The Second Coming. The made-for-television film, screened in February last year, starred him as video shop worker Stove Baxter who goes missing for 40 days before being found on moorland believing the he is the son of God.

Eccleston will find out next month at the TV awards ceremony it his performance has earned him the prestigious best actor award. The Yorkshire Evening Post revealed last week how Eccleston, who is appearing In the Playhouse's new production, Electricity, starting on Friday, has been announced as the new Doctor Who

It will be a reunion of a happy partnership — Russell T Davies has been brought on board as writer for the new BBC series. He wrote Eccleston's potentially award-winning rote in The Second Coming. Eccleston said today: "I am absolutely delighted to be playing Doctor Who.

"I am looking forward to joining forces again with the incredible writer, Russell T Davies, taking both loyal viewers and a new generation on a journey through time and space.

"Which way is the Tardis? I can't wait to get started!"

Eccleston Is up against Love Actually actor Bill Nighy and David Morrissey, both in line for Bafta best actor for their roles in State of Play.

He will also face competition from Yorkshire actor and Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, who has been nominated for his role in the BBC1 adaptation, The Young Visitors.
