AFTER three decades of making us hide behind the sofa, Dr Who is being allowed out of the Tardis for a birthday treat.

Dr Who: Thirty Years In The Tardis (BBC1, Monday, 8pm) travels back in time to the first series of the vintage sci-fi show.

And there will also be classic clips, star interviews and some previously unseen archive material.

John Whiston, executive producer of Monday's programme, puts the success of the series down to English eccentricity.

"People will always love the Doctor for his Britishness," he says.

"We prize the individuality, humour and complexity which sums up the best of the British personality."

Sadly, that element may soon disappear.

Steven Spielberg is planning a remake of the series and the all-American David Hasselhoff is rumoured to be up for the part of the Time Lord.
