JOHN McGUIRE (above) is to be the anchor for a 50-minute documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary of BBC1's science fiction drama Dr Who.

A mixture of archive material and new footage recreating some of the best known moments from the serial's history, the programme will be screened later this month, following a repeat of the 1973 story Planet Of The Daleks, which starts this Friday, November 5, at 7.30pm on BBC1.

Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed that it is in negotiations with top US film director Steven Spielberg's production company Amblin about producing a new version of Dr Who.

If the deal goes ahead, it is expected to give the serial a new lease of life with big budget special effects - but also a largely American cast. A Corporation insider commented: "The BBC would retain rights and some editorial input, but the main creative thrust would come from the US."
