The army of Doctor Who fans -- and admirers of Billie Piper, who plays his assistant -- pushed the eagerly awaited new series to the lop of the ratings on Saturday night.

A peak of 8.3 million viewers tuned in to the relatively new doctor, played by David Tennant. But the figure was down from the opening episode of the previous series last year which attracted more than ten million viewers.

This year the series opener was ranged against the family-friendly film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on ITV1, which had an average-of 5 million viewers with 6.l million watching at its peak.

The BBC's other Saturday night hit, Strictly Dance Fever. drew just 3.8 million viewers and Channel 4's Deal or No Deal attracted 29 million.

The unofficial overnight figures do not include those who record programmes to watch at a later time.

A BBC spokeswoman said that Saturday's ratings were a "brilliant start" for Tennant. "We are really thrilled!" she said.

The Doctor's adversaries in the new series will include Peter Kay, the comedian.
