I AM extremely surprised at all the good publicity the new series of Doctor Who has received ("Billie helps you know who win the ratings war", March 28), when to me the hyped opening episode was just completely daft (mannequins trying to take over the world? I ask you).
As a child, I saw Doctor Who as an exciting adventure, not as spoof television. What we now classify as 'cheesy' television was in fact a serious attempt at drama, and the cheesiness we now talk about is a nostalgic view of the special effects, which were the best they could do at the time. Today's Doctor Who producers can do a lot better with what they have, yet all the BBC can come up with are remote-controlled wheelie bins and breakdancers in mannequin outfits.
