[edit]

THERE are no Daleks, Cybermen or Sea Devils, no wobbly sets and, contrary to early tabloid reports, no sex when Dr Who returns to television after a seven-year gap this weekend. He does, however, get to kiss his co-star Daphne Ashbrook, in his first recorded sign of romantic activity during 950 years as a Time Lord.

At least the Tardis remains reassuringly familiar as a blue police box when it could have been transformed into an Orange phone booth.

The old theme music has also survived the update, although the traditional "woo-wooo" tune has been rearranged for the £3.5 million film, being broadcast by BBC1 on Monday — but out on video tomorrow. The film-makers have tried to produce an action thriller in the vein of Romancing The Stone.

Sylvester McCoy, last seen as Doctor Who when the BBC axed the series in 1989, reappears at the start, transporting the remains of his old enemy The Master through time. The regenerated Dr Who is played by Paul McGann.
