[edit]

THEY'RE keeping K-9, but the Dr Who of the long whirling scarf and absent-minded expression and his efficent assistant Romana are stepping down in favor of the man who became famous as Tristan Farnon, the girl-chasing vet in All Creatures Great and Small.

Peter Davison, who made his name in the television series of James Herriott's best-selling Vets Might Fly books, has begun taping the new Dr Who series but we won't be seeing it until the end of the year.

Davison is the fifth Dr Who and the youngest, and dare I say spunkiest, Dr Who yet. He follows in the famous footsteps of Bill Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

Tom Baker, my favorite Dr Who, was in Australia last year and said then that, while he loved the role, five years was long enough.

In real life Baker was the way every child imagines Dr Who. He had the zany warmth and imagination children love and spent his time in Sydney touring children's hospitals, visiting the deaf and blind at North Rocks and refusing to allow reporters or the press near these visits.

Baker left the show on a high' note. He stole his assistant Romana, in real life Lana Ward, and married her.

"The thought of being without her was appalling," he said.

Davison is excited about playing Dr Who and assures us his will be a different Who — one with smart clothes and no floppy hat and long scarf.

"I couldn't compete with Baker's Dr Who," he said.
