First it was the Daleks, mechanical monsters in the B.B.C. TV serial Dr. Who. Now comes another breed of space fiction weird ease the Voords. And these horrors are all rubber.
If they appear in a new serial The Keys of Marinus, starting on Saturday, and could bounce into the same popularity as the Daleks.
The Voords, played by actors, are encased in thick rubber costumes. They have the horned heads of king-size beetles, key shaped protuberances on their faces, and hands like giant claws.
There are the brainchild of writer Terry Nation and their rubber look was designed by director John Gorrie and costume supervisor Daphne Dare.
The Voords appear on the planet Marinus. Producer Verity Lambert said: "They do not appear in every episode. There only one of many menaces."
