Having given in my preliminary verdict on Matt Smith's new Doctor and Steven Moffat's new Doctor Who the day after its premier in Cardiff last month, I won't attempt to time travel and revise it now. Nor would I want to. Suffice to say, Smith may be young but he is no young pretender. He has authority and he has other-worldliness. and they are mostly what a Doctor Who needs. That and smart writing. Moffat's script although, with so many introductions to make, on the busy side, was witty and intelligent but displayed an almost uncanny feel for the tastes of his youngest audiences. How many of us are close enough to our childhoods to recall there is nothing so frightening as a crack in a wall?
But my favourite line was given to Karen Gillan as the doctor's deliciously delinquent new lieutenant Amy Pond. Why, she wanted to know, was a doctor living in a police box? It's a good joke, and a metaphor that I had not spotted before. Even in 1963, television was dominated by cops and doctors. Doctor Who was something different. Many hundreds of Saturday nights later it still is.
