[edit]

WHEN Colin Baker was told he had landed the role of the sixth Dr Who, he couldn't believe his luck.

"I was convinced that somebody had made a mistake and that Tom Baker had gone back to playing the role," he said.

"Then I found who really was Who. I was amazed and delighted.

"No one could wish for a more charismatic part, with a built-in fan club of millions. It doesn't matter who plays Dr Who, he always enjoys tremendous loyalty from the fans.

Womaniser

"Somehow, they don't seem to mind that the face is always changing."

Charm is something Baker has always had.

Once he was very much the dashing young actor-about-town.

He was seen in all the best places, dining and wining in trendy restaurants and always with the most beautiful women in show business.

But he says he was never really the womaniser he was made out to be.

"My love life was blown out of all proportion because it just happened that the ladies I knew were people that the public recognised," he says.

"I've always been useless at chatting up girls. Perhaps that's why they liked me so much."

The speed with which he married his first wife, actress Liza Goddard, surprised many of their friends. but Colin explains: "We'd known each other for years."

They met again when they were both appearing in a TV series, The Brothers, in which Colin played a tycoon and Liza his fiancée.

Their real-life marriage lasted four years.

Now Colin has been married for more than a year to actress Marion Wyatt.

Their happiness was shattered recently when their two-year-old son, Jack, was found dead, a victim of "cot death."
