THE secret of who's Who is out.

Colin Baker — the actor The Sun once dubbed The Most Hated Man on Telly —is the new time-travelling TV doctor.

Baker will take over the Dr Who role from Peter Davison, who is now filming his last series for BBC 1.

And no one was more surprised at landing the space-age part than 40-year-old Baker.

The man who rocketed to fame as the scheming Paul Merroney in the steamy soap opera, The Brothers, said last night.

Three weeks ago I got a call from Dr Who producer John Nathan-Turner

"I was stunned to be offered the role.

He added; "I see the doctor as a quirky, unexpected, fairly eccentric character."

Baker caused an off-screen sensation in 1976 when he walked out on live-in lover Adrienne Posta and secretly married Liza Goddard.

Four years later they divorced, and last year Baker married actress Marion Wyatt.

Baker's sidekick when the new series is launched is 21-year-old Nicola Bryant who plays American Peri Brown.
