[edit]

Premieres Saturday, February 1 at 9 p.m.

In this first regeneration of the popular Time Lord, Patrick Troughton was faced with the biggest challenge of his career - how to play the enormously successful character, retaining certain traits and adding his own individual ones, without being compared to William Hartnell, the first Time Lord. This of course was going to be an ongoing problem with each regeneration, but for now it was just Patrick Troughton's question. His fears were unfounded, the fans loved his Chaplinesque cosmic hobo.

This slightly offbeat, oddball Zen Master turned loose among the galaxies needed no weapons, no superpowerful strength, no help from Gallifrey (except in his final adventure, The War Games) All Patrick Troughton's Doctor needed was his unique resourcefulness, a magical at and a quick mind. He tried to give the impression that the Doctor was inept at times, and even terrified of some of the monsters he encountered. But underneath it all, he was at least ten jumps ahead of them.

With few exceptions, all noted in the listings, the Troughton series on DOCTOR WHO will be shown each Saturday evening, through completion; the last Saturday of each month one episode of the latest regeneration, Colin Baker's, will be aired.
