FANS of Dr Who may be able to pay to save their favourite programme.
The BBC, which yesterday announced that the top sci-li programme was being dropped because it was too expensive, revealed today it would consider this novel way of raising money.
Fans around the world have offered to help save the series, which was ordered to be shelved for at least 18 months.
In the U.S. Dr Who buffs worked through the night to organise their campaign and have already pledged over £1,500,000 to subsidise the show.
A spokesman for the Dr Who Fan Club of America today said that it alone could raise enough cash to keep the series running for five years.
After hearing of the campaign, BBC officials held immediate talks to discuss the situation.
And a spokesman said today: " We have heard of these reports, although we have not yet had any formal approach. But of course the BBC will consider the offer."
The decision to drop the programme came from BBC-1 Controller Mr Michael Grade, who said he needed the money used for the production of Dr Who to make other programmes.
Stunned Dr Who star Colin Baker said today: "It is a great shame. I was just starting to get under the skin of the character.

But Colin Baker said: "I always thought Dr Who was one of the cheapest programmes made by the BBC.
