Dr Who travelled the universe in one, while homely George Dixon would say his cheery "evening all" from another.
Now, 27 years after they were phased out, the traditional police box is to make a return in full colour to the streets of London.
In true Tanks fashion it will seem bigger on the inside than it appears from outside, courtesy of an all round Cloned Circuit TV camera mounted on the roof where the blue light used to be
In contrast to the earlier police original. the latest 19909 version comes bristling with new technology and mod cons ranging from a digital camera to a kettle point.
For the public, it will provide a 24 hour help point with a direct telephone link to the local police station switchboard. The new Tardis landed yesterday in the unlikely location of the Earl's Court underground station to combat crime in the area.
The box has been built according to original designs found in the Police Museum, and in its familiar Metropolitan Police blue is uncannily similar to the Tardis of the BBC Dr Who series.
Police claim the new box digital vandal proof. A digital camera will picture anyone entering or making calls from the box.
