AN ALIEN planet of green humanoids with bug eyes and long claws sounds a fitting source for Time Lord jewellery. Yet the green amber ring for the new Doctor Who was actually made near Cardiff, not on Raxacoricofallapatorius as he claims.

Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi was inspired with the idea for it when he met the granddaughter of William Hartnell, the first Doctor, during a visit to the set of the Doctor Who origins movie An Adventure In Space And Time.

Capaldi, 56, who co-stars with Jenna Coleman in the BBC series filmed in south Wales, said: "She opened this little box of props from the original series and showed me this fabulous ring."

His own gold band was created by Kate Dumbleton and Petra Aydin Barberini of Rowley's family jewellers in Penarth. Petra's son Idris, 11, let his imagination run wild to create a story for the stone. He told Capaldi: "It reminds him of all the wars he has won but also all the lives he has taken. This thought lurks on his conscience."

Delighted Capaldi called the tale "amazingly affecting". Kate said: "It was a challenge coming up with a design fit for a Timelord."
