Instead of threatening to exterminate her, the Dr Who monster was almost lost for words when they were introduced at a charity auction.
She told the Dalek — which fetched £4200 aid for the Sudan — "I hope you are going to raise lots of money."
If could only splutter in reply "I hope so."
The two came face-to-face at Christie's auction rooms where the sale was being held. Prime Minister Mrs Margaret Thatcher, Opposition leader Mr Neil Kinnock, Liberal leader Mr David Steel and a host of celebrities and stars had given 200 items after an appeal launched jointly by the BBC "Women's Hour" programme and the Red Cross. They hoped to raise £50,000.
The organisers had hoped Miss Ferguson might sign a programme which could have become the star auction lot, but she told them that Royal protocol stopped her.
Mrs Thatcher gave a pair of 19th-century dessert stands which atoned under the hammer at £50.
