Phoenix independent film company Scorpio International, Ltd., recently announced completion of negotiations with the Eastern Educational Television Network (EEN) which will allow stations in domestic markets to broadcast Dr. Who in America, an hour-long documentary on science fiction and fantasy. Early indications are that Dr. Who in America will be airing in most major markets this Fall. Fourteen stations and PBS state network systems have signed up for the broadcast, including WHYY (Philadelphia) and KHUT (Houston), two of the nation's top markets.
The documentary takes a close look at science fiction and the various reasons people fall in love with the genre. Tom Baker, one of the Doctors from the BBC's 21 year old program Dr. Who, makes a rare special appearance on the show. This is a special treat for Dr. Who fans.
"The BBC says there are over 110 million Dr. Who fans in 58 countries. Dr. Who in America was designed so that there would be something in it for every one of those fans and the millions who have somehow still missed seeing some of the past twenty years of the program," says co-writer and co-producer Melle Starsen.
The Eastern Educational Television Network is a national network of Public Broadcasting Stations. The Dr. Who series is aired by PBS stations in most markets. Those stations which are not associated with EEN and who might be interested in broadcasting Dr. Who in America will be encouraged to do so.
Broadcast rights for Dr. Who in America are available from Ed Simmel and Associates, P.O. Box 49307, Los Angeles, CA 90049, (213) 478-0959. A home version of the show is available through Scorpio at P.O. Box 11246, Phoenix, AZ 85061-1246, (602) 274-8532.
