COMEDIAN Ken Dodd is to play the first death scene in his 30-year career... and it is all to save BBC TV's Dr Who from the axe.
The latest Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, and his assistant, played by Bonnie Langford, are being joined by a galaxy of stars to save the ailing show.
Viewing figures have collapsed from 12 million in the show's heyday to about six million.
Ken is to meet his doom at the hands of Don Henderson who plays the detective Bulman in ITV's new series.
Dramatic
The assignment is worrying Don. "After this I could be known as the man who killed Ken Dodd rather than Bulman," he said yesterday.
But Ken is not too concerned even though the only other dramatic role he has played was as Malvolio in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
"My death scene will be one of the longest ever. It's the first one I've ever done and it's my big acting break.
Ken, who plays a galactic gatekeeper in an episode to be screened in November, has joined the cast filming on location in Barry Island, South Wales.
"I can remember watching the very first show," he said. I've wanted to appear in the series ever since. I just hope it survives."
