[edit]

THERE have been few editions of Dr Who in which that extraordinary time machine, the Tardis, hasn't faded from view.

It has always returned, of course, but now the BBC wants the antiquated police box to fade away forever.

According to the BBC, the battered blue police-box has to go because young viewers don't know what it is supposed to be.

Said Dr Who producer John Nathan-Turner: "Police boxes are a thing of the past.

"I think the last one in England went about four years ago and a whole generation of children has grown up believing the box to be a Tardis and nothing else."

That dear, familiar police-box will be phased out during the next Dr Who series, but although the Doctor will still have a time machine, Nathan-Turner and his team still can't decide what it will look like.

The new Dr Who, Colin Baker, says he will be sorry to lose the police box.

"It's a shame, but I take John's point," he said.

"Originally, the Tardis was supposed to blend in with its surroundings, and when the series began there were police boxes all over the place."
