The Church on Ruby Road marks a double return: Russell T Davies back at the helm in the festive season, and a special back on Christmas Day for the first time since 2017. It's also a double new start - the full debut of the 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, the first black and foreign-born actor to be cast as the Time Lord, and the introduction of his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Much of the plot turns on the mysterious infancy of Ruby, who was abandoned at the church and now lives with her mum (Michelle Greenidge) and grandma (Angela Wynter). Woven into this storyline - featuring Anita Dobson and Davina McCall as herself - is Gatwa's Doctor's first adventure, in which the villains are goblins. Is it coincidence that it's not uncommon for them to be confused with trolls?
